2023 - Sweden's oldest men's shop turns 140 years old!

Pandemics, recessions, online shopping and shopping malls - nothing stops Sweden's oldest men's clothing, which is now 140 years old.

Stenströms Herr- & Damekipering on Stortorget in Helsingborg is the country's oldest clothing store for men.

- For 140 years, we have fashion-consciously provided customers in Helsingborg and the surrounding area with service and professional knowledge to find the perfect garment. Since 2012, we have also had the pleasure of offering the same service online through Stenstromsstore, says Björn Anderberg, who is responsible for the men's department and the webshop.

It all started in 1883 when August Stenström opened a shop on Kullagatan in Helsingborg. Stenström grew up in Malmö and trained as a tailor in Berlin. But when he was about to open a shop, the choice fell on the city he believed would bring the greatest success.

- The workforce is in Malmö, the knowledge in Lund, but the capital, we find that in Helsingborg, Stenström said of his decision.

Demand for his shirts grew rapidly – ​​every elegant gentleman of the time wanted a Stone Stream shirt – which required a larger store in the heart of the city. Since 1901, Stenströms Herr- & Damekipering has been in the current premises on Stortorget.

Today, the store is run by the Anderberg family, the fifth family to carry on the legacy of August Stenström.

August Stenström also founded Stenström's shirt factory in 1899. Today, the shirt factory and the store are two separate companies with different owners, but they are still considered the most important cooperation partner of the store's suppliers.

In 1883, tailor August Stenströms realized his dream and opened a shop in the heart of Helsingborg. His knowledge of how to sew shirts he had learned from his many trips to Berlin and now he took this expertise with him to convince the Swedes about fabric, fit and feel in the perfect shirt. The rumor spread quickly that the Tailor in Helsingborg made them the best shirts and in 1899 Stenström's shirt factory was started and success was soon a fact. At the same time, the store was sold to merchant Knut Håkansson, who continued to run the store with Stenström's shirts as the most important product group.

The store, Stenströms Herr & Damekipering, is located today at Stortorget 12, Helsingborg, Sweden and has done so since 1906. Today, the store is run by the Anderberg family, who are the fifth family to carry on the legacy of August Stenströms.
